The Full Scottish #4

A breakfast option in every accommodation.  At it's most expansive, it has included ones's choice of the following:  grilled tomato, grilled mushrooms, sausage, black pudding (blood sausage), haggis (Scottish favorite made of sheep organs, oatmeal, onion and spices contained in a sheep's stomach and simmered 3 hours), bacon, an egg, baked beans, potato scone and toast.  Strictly for  the vanishing breed of gluten-tolerant, carbohydrate-eating omnivores.  Emily, vegetarian, was offered veggie sausages of rosemary, and potato-leak.  Two thumbs up.

Bar food - quick and reasonable - includes jacket (baked) potatoes.  A favorite.  Some fillings offered have been: coleslaw, cheese, baked beans, chili (with and without meat), garlic butter, curry, various vegetables such as broccoli, onions, egg and mayonnaise (egg salad), mushrooms and tuna.

Scottish word of the day:  airer - clothes drying rack

Leven to Elie - 10 miles

Defensive barrier against German assault during World War II

Andrew Selkirk, local boy from Largo, is the inspiration for the book "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Dafoe.  He was a navigator on the ship "Cinque Ports".  The ship had many problems, the last of which made Andrew believe it was unseaworthy.  He asked to be left on Juan Fernandez Island where he waited 4 years to be rescued.  His former ship went down a few days after his abandonment.  The few sailors that survived spent 7 years in a Peruvian jail.

Rated best vegetarian meal by Emily.  "Ploughman's Lunch". With local hand-made Brie and red pepper-mascarpone soup.  Thanks  to West Weymess "Walk Inn".

"Lomond Guest House" in Leven.  Group rating - 5 stars.  Once the headquarters for the Polish Resistance in WWII  - also served as a YWCA.
